A little about Editing Films

Above: Editing focus from Walter Merch

My students are editing their final films at the moment. It is good to remember the original script, storyboards and work out the film’s voice, emotion and rhythm. Also not being too attached to shots- each shot, each character, each cut should service the film. I like narrative and non narrative films, linear and non linear stories, abstract and stylised films. I like them all!

But they must be effective!

‘Every Second Counts’ – the name of this trailer about editing and creating short films. It was created for the St Kilda Film Festival 2016. They are one of the largest short film festivals. Each year they get amazing filmmakers to create a trailer and this one is good.  Be warned it contains some gun shooting.

Walter Merch: an amazing editor of these films:

He writes and speaks so beautifully on editing. Excerpt from his philosophical and practical book on editing: ‘In the Blink of an Eye’ The following video highlights some of his life lessons.
